Int. S1654LP Retired UHAUL Build

OK, here we go...

This Toter is for the sole purpose of moving a jeep around to wheeling events and venues and allowing me to sleep in AC on a real bed! I am no going cross country or living in her full time. The Jeep is an '04 TJ on 3/4 ton axles... on 35s. The idea is to keep this on a budget of under $8K.

The starting point:

1989 International Harvester S1654LP with a 7.3, 5 spd and 217K on the clock. ($3000) purchase and reg/Tag (remanned motor aprox 30K on it)

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...7df2261609.jpg

Ditch the bench seat in the cab for used air ride seats cut a pass thru.($100 seats used $100 to recover and $65 accordian gasket)

https://www.accordionboot.com/

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...23a3ce46b5.jpg

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...f1392ed4ca.jpg

set a ramps #5000 each ($500)

https://www.discountramps.com/truck-trailer-ramps.htm very nicely built and super light!

bydesign 03-26-2013 07:24 AM

Here is the basic game plan:

Bed over cab

Insulate forward 10' of the box

divider wall between garage and living area

pop a few used / new RV windows

basic galley

AC / DC wiring in living area (already have a genset)

maybe a shower and pota potty in the garage area when the TJ is not there...

bydesign 03-26-2013 07:28 AM

Tune up:

oil change
fuel filter
air filter
glow plugs
injectors
return plumbing (injectors)
relaced power sterring pump bracket (recall issue)
fuel tank sending unit
cleaned up the wiring on the batteries

about $350 and two days under the hood

Looks like a cool project. Keep in mind that rv windows that open are made for the drivers side or passenger side. They will leak if on the wrong side. You might think about sealing any place you cut through the FRP walls to make sure water won't get into the plywood. Good luck and keep the pictures coming and I like the way the passenger bucket seat matches the uhaul paint. Have fun Kenn

bydesign, you probably already are aware, but there are a handful of S1654 conversions on Pirate4x4. I am in the process of doing one myself, and have similar plans for a layout. If nothing else, you should start a thread over there so those who have gone before you can chime in.

Sounds like you did pretty good on the price. Mine was 3500, but ended up needing a bit more than a simple tune up.

My pass-through idea is the same as yours. what are you planning to do to seal between the box and cab? Are you going to include a shuttable door?

I re-read your post, and I see the bit about the accordion gasket. Any chance you can post pics of your finished pass through?

will get better pics this weekend

expensivehobby22 04-16-2013 12:05 PM

Thanks for the pictures. It looks really good, and like what I'm hoping to do.

What size opening did you go with?

A lot of my box modifications are going to have to wait until later this year. Like I said, my truck needed a bit more work than I expected, so I ended up just going through it and doing all the preventative maintenance (and then some).

Cheers,

aprox 2.5' x 4.5' fits nicely betwteen the airrides... I am 6' tall and a solid 275 pounds... and I can duck thru no problem

expensivehobby22 04-17-2013 11:22 AM

What exactly was the power steering pump bracket recall?

The brackets cracked and the belt would hop off... I think the replacements can be found for about $35 at the uhaul truck parts place...

bydesign 04-22-2013 07:08 AM

Got a fair amount accompliahed this weekend...

Last two windows are in (second one in the loft and one in the living room)

also located the poor connection at the the starter for the glow plug relay which had been giving me intermnittent hard starts... $0.45 parts... hours of fun!

here are some close ups of the passageway... cab to box

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...79ab407266.jpg

secong window in the loft...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...2b5d40a094.jpg

and I do most of my work in flip flops! it is South Florida!

bydesign 04-22-2013 07:08 AM

more progress...

and the final window in the living room...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...c953e55206.jpg

TJ in the background is the reason for this whole project!

and of course cooling off after a long day working on the toter with Helen...and a few cold ones...!

Looking good. I'm really digging the pass through.

SparkyRnD 04-22-2013 08:12 PM

good looking build. I have similar ramps, but mine has the 90* turn down at the upper end and we built channels for them. Will be watching this thread :)

bydesign 05-06-2013 07:14 AM

So the door that came on her was plywood cr^p! and that just would not do... the guys at Diamond hooked me up big time... what a great company to deal with... Thank you for the fantastic service... New door with hardware...$430 and another $100 or so to get it to my door... two man job but manage to get her in...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...96ab783f36.jpg

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...429a2c0ec4.jpg

then it was off to play in the evergaldes!

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...1202559b6f.jpg

next week will be busy... CL buy $20 for a CB and another $100 for a used headliner and overhead consol with sun visors... to mount the CB in!

bydesign 05-23-2013 07:43 AM

Overhead consol

So the rainy weather has slowed down some of the progress... I did manage to get the patch installed on the FRP on the passanger side of the box... bought a piece from the UHAUL truck store online... pretty cheap...

I did find an overhead consol from 4300 for cheap... had to drop the head liner and install a brace (3/4" alm angle) from side to side... so I could secure the consol... cleaned it up and rattle canned it tan...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...0fcfdb091d.jpg

some new elastic on the storage pouches and good as new!

bydesign 06-10-2013 09:58 AM

Started packing out the interoir walls and added the insulation... basically 3/4" of foil faced panels... glued up and the pack out is ply ripped down so I have something to screw the finish panels too... hopefulyy I will get the loft / attic done tonight. Then I can work on the ceiling!

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...ea2d7fa3ca.jpg

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...e3badb3f93.jpg

Doc Weaver 06-11-2013 10:44 PM

looking good and kinda familiar lol

bydesign 06-24-2013 03:25 PM

I ended up puting 1.25" of foilbacked foam into the roof before covering it with roll wave PVC roofing... it was flexible enough to roll down across the 45 dergee edges of the roof to the wall... and it is easily removable to add wiring for lighting and or speakers...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...ebb2921ed7.jpg

and the walls got 3/4" (they are already 5/8" ply FRP) then they were covered with FRP panel also screwed into place so future wiring and or plumbing will be simple...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...464afa4ce4.jpg

Finally gave up on an intermitant alt.... replaced with a remanned unit for $78... no core so i figure I will have the OEM rebuilt for a spare

bydesign 06-24-2013 03:28 PM

here is a shot with the side panels up... and the roof ready for the roll panels

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...0fe509b711.jpg

bydesign 07-15-2013 09:17 AM

First haul... only 2 hrs away... steady 65 MPH no problems... going!
https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...fa0d1ab11a.jpg
Great time wheeling at Lazy Springs off road park in south florida... tons of fun! AVTs and UTVs Jeep and other 4x4s... fantastic park...

https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...256b08b7e7.jpg

unfortunately threw a tread on the inside rear on the drivers side... I knew the tires were about 6 years old... and the truck sat for a while before I got her... time for new shoes... The interor is still in process but it was realy comfortable... and will only become nicer!

expensivehobby22 07-18-2013 09:50 AM

Looking good. I just used mine to "gasp" move. 4,000 mile trip from the west to east coast with it's fair share of problems. Also lost an inner dual. Luckily I had signed up for coachnet, so I was only out the cost of the tires. Which was good bc we were far away from any exits.

Anyway, good to see you out using yours. I like the simplicity of the ceiling you came up with.

Thank you... she is coming along... I just signed up for coach net... just put six new tires on this week... but well worth the investment...

where are u on the east coast?

expensivehobby22 07-18-2013 12:19 PM

I am in Massachusets now. So, a long ways away.

Good on the tires. I now have 4 new ones. Two before the trip, and two during. Kept the unblown dual as a spare.

I like the look with the black grille and black headlight buckets. That's what I was planning on doing too.

Coachnet just returned my application... they say they do not cover covered vehicles or Toters in general?

expensivehobby22 07-19-2013 10:35 AM

That's odd. I was honest with them over the phone about what my truck was, though I don't think I specifically said toter. I think I just said converted moving truck.

is it a registered RV ? i would just tell them "RV" and be done w/ it.

bydesign 07-29-2013 06:58 AM

bushpilot... no but I will take that aproach when I change over the reg...

very productive weekend... new tires all the way around on fri and let me tell you, when in Hialeah if you really want to blow them minds of the tire guys... when you pick up your rig show up in a jeep on steroids and drive it up into the back of your rig! They went nuts! Told them it was my spare...

I framed out the buckhead between the living quarters and the garage, got the storm door hung... and bedlinered the floor in the living quarters...

also picked up an AC unit that will be hung above the door... welded up a tray / brackets to tie it into the side and ceiling...

pics to follow shortly

when I change over the registration I will try again... what make is your awning? That will be my next project... by the way really sharp looking rig! and not just because you have a good looking JK trailing behind it!

Herculiner on the floor... nice stuff... stinky but great sound deadening... quited the cab down dramatically!

here is one more looking thru the door from the garage into the living area
https://www.truckconversion.net/attac...d469e793ee.jpg

The galley base cabinets will go along this wall with the micro wave hung up under the over hang of the bed... and a futon / coach will run along the other wall... in the galley cab will reside a small fridge / instant hot water heater and a small bar sink... trying to keep it simple

expensivehobby22 07-29-2013 03:43 PM

Looking good.

I'm very curious to hear how the A/C perfoms where you are going to put it. I am considering the same, but am little worried about pumping the heat from it into the garage area. I'm sure that if it works for you down in Florida it will work well for me.
