How much kW 's do you really need?

Building a toter , not sure just how big a generator I will need . I want it to be a 50 amp shore , two a/c 's and the normal other stuff . Any suggestions ?

Our coach has a QD10K and personally i think its too much....An 8k would do us just fine.
I always expected the 8k fuel consumption to be less (until i really started looking at these numbers, posted below).

1/2 load consumption of the 8k & 10k are close to the same, but the 8k does consume more ( .49 & .43 gph respectively)
the 8k sucks a bit more fuel than the 10k at full load (1.02 & 1.0 gph respectively)....almost a quart more per hour.

the 8kw weighs quite a bit less than the 10kw (420 lbs vs 765 lbs)
the 8k has a variable throttle, the 10k throttle is constant (which might account for the 3db increase in noise).

most toter's only have one AC unit - you would be fine w/ an 6k (with plenty of wattage to spare).
I'd look at the service intervals between the units too - things like oil/fuel filter change intervals & coolant flush intervals.

the above specs came from onan - they also list other (propane & gasoline gen specs here) - https://www.cumminsonan.com/www/html/.../rv/F-1123.pdf

man a little bit of research tonight is making me feel slightly better about my 10kw....
knowing i never run it at full load - I'm probably consuming less fuel than it seems, and the oil change interval less frequent (@ 250 hrs).

of course the oil capacity is less in the 8k vs the 10k (2.8 qt vs 5.9 qt)
coolant capacity is 4qt vs 6.6 qt - so over all the 10k is gonna cost slightly more to service.

thanks for the info

I've got an 8k Quiet Diesel Onan and it seems to be plenty of power for my two roof airs and everything else.

I just happen to have an Onan RV 7.5 diesel genset for sale if interested.
call 715-524-9231, ask for Patrick. I prefer a phone call to endless e-mails
asking $2700.00 OBO

bushpilot 08-26-2014 08:25 AM

The QD 7500's (HDKAx) are 30A & the OP wanted 50A

qwcslvr1 08-28-2014 08:36 AM

First off, its NOT a QD 7500. Like I posted it's a RV 7.5 and it IS a 50amp.
So please refrain from critiquing some ones post without having all the facts.
Thank you,
Patrick

oh so its MY fault you didn't provide any DETAILS ?? even now ??
perhaps knowing the model number, hours etc would help a buyer....

is that a single leg of 120 at 50a ? or 2 legs of 120 at 50a ? details details details

you might notice nearly ALL 7.5 (standard diesel) units are 30A...so how would one know !?!?

qwcslvr1 08-28-2014 09:44 AM

LOL, WOW ! 7.5 DKDFJ 120/240 Commercial/RV 5234 hrs, and like I said please CALL for more info I would rather speak to someone on the phone than spend time typing endless e-mails and posts. 715-524-9231 ,Patrick

qwcslvr-

Welcome to the forum.

It might be pointed out that the whole purpose of a forum is "endless posts" so that many other people can read through the thread, possibly for years to come, and gain some knowledge from your posts and others posts. You should be glad that some others take the time typing "endless posts" or there would be no forum at all for you to try to sell your generator for free, and no advice for that potential buyer to help them decide your unit is right for them. But like I said, welcome.

bushpilot 08-28-2014 10:29 PM

i wonder what is more likely to occur - a dozen calls (possibly some missed or unanswered) to get the details, price, location, model, condition, beg for pictures.....or a dozen browsers who move on because they don't see enough details.

So funny , how many hours can a diesel gen run before an over haul is needed ? 5200 hrs seem like a bunch , but I maybe be wrong

Double K 09-08-2014 09:28 PM

Weight of toter ?

What's the weight of a toter ? Drove a medium duty truck today , not sure if it would struggle , trying to decide mdt or hdt , I will have 30' box , and tow a 24 ft race trailer .

Ive got 3200 hours on my QD10k and its fine -
Onan calls for bearing replacement (in the stator) at 3600 hrs iirc.

I developed a short in the stator and had to replace it (replaced the bearings then too) - so I'm good to go....my generator isn't burring any oil or showing any signs of poor running.

We put about 150 hrs on the generator per year (mostly to run the roof/house air conditioners while driving)....this year our mileage & generator run time will be significantly lower.
