Cummins engines
Im looking at some truck VIN# and the trucks are 1500 miles away, But Im trying to figure out What it means about the engine when the 8th digit is a (C) This truck is a year 2000 freightliner and has only 48,713 Original miles on the cummins. / Another has a (A) for 8th digit and it has 181,969 miles on it also a 2000 freightliner. Does anyone know what this means? And how will I recognize a N14 cummins? They have quiet a few of these trucks. Id like one with a decent engine. Most of the Trucks with the Cats, and Detroit's have around 300,000 on them. These are good trucks, haven't been used much, I know the owner. I want a N14 for my truck conversion camper.

This Ones a 1999 International
4700 Flatbed With only 57,993 miles on it Truck #12 230336
Curious about International because it has a 8 cylinder Diesel in it. It has a flatbed with toolboxes under both sides.

I don't think you could get a N14 in a FL70. The few FL70/60's I looked at had smaller engines. I don't think they could fit the big blocks in those trucks.

Your probably right, what would it be then a 5.9 ?

could be a 5.9 but I would think more like an 8.3. That is a pretty common motor in the larger diesel pusher motorhomes, I would imagine they put that in the medium duty trucks as well.

I found a place last week where I can type in the VIN and pull up the truck. And It will just tell me its a 6 cyl diesel, On the International truck it said 8 cyl diesel, Gives me the truck make and model, country of assembly and all that junk. But I keep reading that the 8th digit in the VIN describes what engine it is yet Nobody has been able to tell me what that digit needs to be , On my old 12 valve Dodge Its a (c) . But I think thet quit using those in 1998 in pickups. I would have thought a truck this size would not have a pickup truck engine in it but it may have because cummins are considered commercial I believe.

The V8 is probably a 9 liter similar to what Ford used-may be a good idea to stay away from it. I had a International 4700 with a DT466, not great on power but sure was dependable. Happy hunting.

Hey thanks man. Im just trying to find A decent truck and engine so I can go camping and riding , Just me and the wife. I have a 2500 cummins Turbo Diesel at home. But I get tired of feeling like a Box turtle with a small truck and huge camper on top of it lol, I have my pick of these trucks. As far as looks they all look good. They are all in nice neat condition. They all have low miles. Friend owns them. Shes only charging me 2 grand for which ever I want. They are going to sale them all though. Any advise on which one is a good motor is much appreciated. I know any motor can be damaged. But I know that some of you folks have a lot of experience on this. I think any of them would last me a long time because I baby everything I own. I may bring 7 or 8 of these to Oklahoma and sale them if eveything goes well. It will cost to much in Cali to retrofit the engines and bring them up to code. If they go to auction they wont bring jack.

What was I thinking, the engine size is probably 7.3 liter although it would be cool to have a 9 liter in a 1 ton lol

Yea, but actually the truck Im looking at is a class 7 commercial vehicle, All of these trucks here on the thread are semi's/

I had to go back to my Cummins data sheets - the N14 is based on 855 cid block - which would make it an 14L engine. They renamed it the ISX. 1250-1850 lbs torque @ 1200 rpm. We had one in our salmon troller - great engine - never broke down on us, in continuous service for more than 18 yrs.
