Garage door height for conversion

Hi I'm new to the forum.

I'm building a garage before I get a truck conversion. Is 14 feet high enough roll up door clearance for a truck and stacker?

Will that allow enough room for A/C units, etc on a class 8 conversion?

Thanks Mike

if your around the mid west max height is 13' 6". most doors are 14' around here.

Bob86ZZ4 02-01-2011 08:33 AM

Yep, most the rigs and stackers will be under 13'6". A 14' high door sometimes won't actually open 14' high. The door will often hang down a bit under the framing. If you make sure you've got 14' clearance with the door up you should be okay with anything.

Thanks for the info. I will make sure the roll-ups (front and rear) will be 14 feet minimum.

I was going to use industrial doors, but the contractor states large sectional doors would be easier to service in the event of damage.

Just finished my installing two commercial doors on my "Barn". They are 12W X 14H. These are the heavier 20ga insulated doors. Ordered from Doors Online. Delivered with commercial openers they were $3200. MMM

Thanks Bob. Just completed wiring the inside this weekend. Weather here has been terrible the last two weeks with record snowfall and low temperatures. Got up into the sixties today ,almost got my shorts out! Here is a side view. The building is 40 x 70 x 16. Built to house my toter and trailer if I ever finish it. MMM

We've had record snow and cold in MN too. I don't see any snow in your pics tho. What kind of lights did you put up? They look pretty cool. Maybe insulation and heat is next? Hahahha.

Two weeks ago,14" snow with 50 mph winds, last week 10" snow with 30 MPH winds.Got down to -4 degrees. Last few days it has been 50-60 degrees. Snow melted quickly. I am sure thats not a big snow for your part of the country but we are not equipped to handle it very well. It's hard to find a snow blower in this part of the country! Supposed to be mid 70's today!
The "Barn" will be just for storage as I have a 4000 sf "Shop" for working in. It has central heat/air. The lights are 400W metal haliede canopy lights like you see at c-stores and gas stations. Purchased online at bargain price. They really light up the Barn.
My son and I build custom steel buildings on the side to make a make few extra bucks. I use the shop to show people what can be done with a steel building. It has a kitchenette, full bath,washer/dryer and office. Stays 65 degrees all the time. Should have built it 30 years ago!

The Shop:

Man, that is the perfect sized buildign for a workshop, especially for building a custom rig! Put in a bathroom and a small kitchen and you'd never have to leave :-)

Where is home where you're having all this unusual weather?

mmmc101 04-01-2011 07:26 AM

Age old saying in Oklahoma....If you don't like the weather just wait five minutes.
Just finished the second all time driest month of March... .03 inches of rain total.
