Well I did it. For reasons known only to me, I bought a 34 foot Airstream Trailer in Columbia Falls Montana. Actually the reason(s) is fairly straight forward $. I have my nice Volvo Hauler and no fifth wheel. Want to buy a good fifth wheel, but don't have the 30 to 40k to invest right now. So in order to have a little fun bought the airstream

Going to leave here on 7/11 and drive out to pick it up. So you don't have to look it up, Columbia falls is on the west side of glacier.

Anyone on the net between Stillwater MN and Glacier?

Will put up a picture, so when you get passed by a silver streak you will know who to blame.

Chuck

PS. It is geoffs fault.

Chuck: We are still at Angostura State Rec area 55 miles south of Rapid City on Hiway 385. 5 Miles south of Hot Springs. Will be here till Sept 5th or thereabouts. Stop on by, coffee is on.

Chuck: If you need any ideas contact "Don E in Texas"....he is on the list here somewhere also and tows with a Freightliner IIRC. Remember to look in your mirrors now and then because you won't even feel the trailer behind you....geof in Cincinnati

Chuck: Another thought! If you can make Rapid City on Sunday - Thursday, I'd like to meet with you at Flying J there. (605) 745-5827 in Hot Springs will get me or the machine if this is doable.

Hey, if you guys meet in Rapid City, give me a call at 605-484-0783, I'll try to hook up with you. I'm still trying to get down to Angastora Jim, but have been busy since returning from Alaska.

Jeff: Got your number. Trying to co-ordinate with Chuck as to when he would be in RC. I have to take my Honda's to the dealer in Rapid and am trying to kill two birds with one little rock. Need fuel too.

Jim,

Just let me know, I am working on a construction/remodeling project near the Flying J, so it would be easy for me to get away and meet you guys. The Honda dealer is right on your way to the Flying J, at the intersection of Hwy 79 and Hwy 44.

Okay - lets do a mini rally - whereever 3 or more rvers meet it is a rally or a church service I forget which.

I am going to leave on Thursday a week from tomorrow, and pick up the airstream on Saturday the 12. Why don't we plan on meeting in Rapid city on Tuesday the 15th, at the flying J.

Someone else pick the time. I will be skulking about the area on Monday so anytime will work for me. Debra is not going with me, she has to w---. ugh!

How about others on this forum, Rapid City is either the center of the universe or the middle of nowhere depending on your point of view. Oldphone man, two day jaunt for you.

Well, I prefer to think of it as the center of the universe, but I live here.

Morning would work best for me, if possible, as the wife and I might head to Yankton in the afternoon for a couple of days of camping at Lewis & Clark lake with the pickup camper.

Morning would work for me as they stop serving their buffet breakfast at 11 AM. Everyone has to be somewhere so we may as well be there. Tuesday the 15th is on the calender. CU then. Be a trip seeing the two + rigs in the parking lot. Mine needs a bath real bad.

Chuck,

If it will work for Jim, 9:00 sounds great to me, We decided to run down to Denver instead of Yankton, and want to try to get out of town by noon.

I won't have a fancy tow rig there, but might drive the Unimog just to be different.

We will be at Rice Honda at about 8:30 on the 15th as I set up an appointment for the two Rebels to be serviced. They open at 9AM so all I have to do is the paperwork and will head for Flying J then. Went out to the J today and was surprised at how open everything was. Real nice place.

Rice Honda seems like an appropriate name!

See everyone there at 9:00ish. Too bad the others can't make it. If we tell them that Valerie will be there maybe it will change a few minds.

Wow Chuck, that Airstream looks tiny behind your rig! Love the flame job. Thought I was the only one crazy enough to want to do that to an RV (had planned a flame job on a Flxible bus I own).

Sorry I missed you when you came thru, but I was on my way to Denver that day.

I pull a 31' Airstream behind my '98 Freightliner Class 8 tractor, too. No leveling bars, just hook up and go. No sway - no problems. Have towed about 6,000 miles so far. I called Airstream about using leveling bars with the big truck - was told they were not needed.

geoff:

Don E answered for me, I used nothing, and there was not a problem with the trailer swaying. As I posted on the airstreamforum board, I did have drawers open etc. Some of the guys said this may be due to pulling with a large stiff chassis, and maybe I should look into a air hitch. I may do so. I can only find a couple of recevier air hitches and one looks very suspect.

Going to ask over on that forum for ideas.

By the by, Jim and Valerie are excellent hosts, anyone in south dakota should stop by. Warning on the directions to the park. When you see the sign, it is to late.
