Standard cab height without wind fairings?

I hope I am posting this question in the right forum area. My husband and I have decided we want to buy a flat top sleeper (with no wind fairing) for towing our large 5th wheel camper. Not sure yet if we are going to buy a single or tandem axle truck. Due to the height of the 18-wheeler cabs we know we are going to need to raise the garage door height to park it inside. I would like to ask how many inches from the ground to the highest part of the top of the cabs are. We want to get one of the shorter cabs. He will have to shorten the stacks to match the cab height. I have read where Volvo VN610's are 10'10" high. We really don't want a garage door higher than 12 feet. What about the cab height of others like Peterbilt 379 and 387's, Freightliners, White, and the rest of the low and flat top sleepers? Thank you.

Welcome to the Truck Conversion forum. That's a great decision to buy a HDT (heavy duty truck) to pull the 5ver! There is actually a pretty good size group of people doing that. The best forum I've found for this type of discussion is over at the Escapee's site: https://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?showforum=32

I'd take a look around there and do some searches and I'll bet the info you're looking for will be there. You should definately consider coming to the National HDT Rally! HDT Rally . The group is very very nice and you'll have a great time. You certainly don't need the hdt to attend either. I've been to the last two and there are always people attending that want to research before buying. And, often there are people that have rigs for sale (either upgrading or getting off the road).

Hope to see you at the Rally!

Marjorie,
There is no "standard height" for an HDT. Each will vary by body style, tire size and so on. If your plan is to put just the truck in the garage ,12 feet would be more than enough. Assuming of course you have adjusted the stacks accordingly. As an example my Kenworth W900 is 10' 1" to the top of the air horns. It has 1100 24.5 tires. If it had low pro 22.5 tires it would be several inches lower.I suspect most trucks will easily clear a 12' door. Of course if it was possible to go to 14' you could get the trailer in as well.

Most overpasses are 13'-13'6" so I would thing a 12' door would be fine.
