all I've ever used is a putty knife, some of its tougher than others (if its been there a long time / cured) you might need to use a metal putty knife....but then my roof is aluminum sheet.

I wonder if it goes to your awning anemometer (for auto retraction/roll-up of the awning when it gets windy)? clearly...
