Anybody out there that can lead me in the right direction to replace a DT466 International engine with a Cummins or Detroit in the 9 to 14 liter range.

Will the frame handle it?
Can I weld new motor mounts to the existing frame?

Other considerations?

Thanx

.....Why?.....labor costs and time are a big item now.....trade the clunker and buy up and forget all the work-It's got to be a ROYAL PIA to fit it up....Interest rates are fairly low if you have the credit score -averaging about 5.5% currently.....If money is an issue then get a second job and use that money of offset the higher costs.....I think Caterpiller bolts in with some motormount changes....I'd have to ask my trash hauler as he just did a repower on this International to a Cat.....His labor costs are rather low because he uses jail inmates as mechanics with his son supervisin'.....geof kaye

Randy,
You really do not want to weld anything to the frame.
As for the engine swap I am sure that if you want to spend the time then you can find an engine that you could put in. The biggest problem after you actually get it mounted in the frame is finding suitable linkages and clutch fans, etc.,etc... Most componants will not simply transfer over. Unless you find a junker or wreck with the powerplant that you want I would advise against trying to change. We used to build our road tractors from wrecks and glider kits, but about ten years ago we found that the cost savings were no longer there.

Randy-
These guys are right. Yeah, maybe the frame might physically take the engine(s) in question- for a while. Then it will tweak the frame to DEATH. A medium-duty frame is NOT built as strong as a Class 8 frame, and will not take the torque load these engines can put out for very long. If you want Class 8 power, it should come in a Class 8 truck. You will be WAY happier. Happy truckin'! Gary

Besides the fact, you can get a DT466 to 600hp without too much trouble. Scheids & Hypermax do some crazy things with them.

Define "trouble". Yeah, the engine CAN put out that much power. For a while. Don't expect it to happen on a constant basis. There ain't no free lunch. If you want big power and need it for a big load, start with a big engine. This is no place for shortcuts.

....most 1800 I know of are vocationals [mainly garbage] some are schoolies also.....what you got in mind?.....LUK...geofkaye

Trouble, as in the effort to get to 600hp. Scheids & Hypermax use DT's for sled pulling making over 2000hp. They say 600 in a truck is easy. Injectors, a couple pump mods, & turbo(s). Just because it can make 600hp, doesn't mean it's driven at that power level all day.
