MDT vs HDT conversion and insurance

Hello,

ill be soon in the marked for a larger truck, if I pursue with the purchase of a large fifth wheel.
When i look at pricing for converted MDT’s i find that it might be way less expensive to convert an old HDT.
in particular i would look at either a older FL70 / FL60 as a MDT, or, which i prefer more, looking at a single axles Pete 359 as HDT hauler.
One of the biggest question i have ,would be as to what is required to tag a 359 as an RV and secondly, how high would a regular insurance be ? What company would you insure with ?

any help is greatly appreciated.
thanks

I converted my GMC 6500 topkick a couple of years ago to tow my 40' race car trailer (now 36' toy hauler) and I really wish I would have started with an hdt instead. My chassis was cheap since it was a regular cab, but I should have started with a bigger truck. Time effort and money to do the work on the truck would have been about the same no matter what truck I started with. My advice don't even consider putting the time and money into an mdt, you'll end up with a better, more reliable, more powerful truck, and actually have something with some resale value when you are done.

The Escapee's forum has a lot of info for HDT haulers. They have a HDT section. There are also often converted HDT's for sale in the sale section. You can save tons of money buying one already built. Here's their forum: Escapees Discussion Forum
