Default Suggestion on how to make a few bucks for your gas

I found that if you post on Craigslist you can find people who want small amounts of things moved. A dresser or so, a bed, couple of boxes, etc. If you have room inside or even decide to haul a small trailer I just charge them what u-haul would charge for the trailer. Just getting ready to go to New Hampshire and am getting $560 for hauling a trailer that I already own back there. Sure will do a nice dent in my fuel bill.

Venturing into the longer distance drayage trade.

strong caution is advised !

if you have an accident and your insurance finds out you are hauling COMMERCIALLY (for pay) they will likely deny you coverage & cancel your policy.

worst still is the fact that if someone claims you damaged their goods and demands payment or sues, you could be in SIGNIFICANT financial trouble.

Make sure your CDL and log book are up to date too!

I'm not sure it would be worth the risk. If DOT catches you, they will lower the boom on you for more than fines. they will also make you run DOT numbers, insurance, commercial tags, CDL etc even when you are just driving for fun.

If you have nothing to lose, ie no assets to speak of, or a paycheck to attach.....go for it.

Me, I wouldn't even THINK about it.
