Not as bad if the box wasn't just a converted freight box. I like the truck. Cheaper and I might consider it.

A converted freight box CAN be done with a little more finesse than this one was, and for NOT much more money. That is what I actually plan on doing, with a little newer truck and a bit shorter box. It WILL look better. Really. Just you wait....and wait....

About 4'. A 20' box plus a 58" sleeper on a Century cab ought to be about right for me.

You're not the only one; I like the look, but not the logistics of how to climb over the doghouse to get to the front seats. A minor gripe, but some thing to think about. You're right about it looking WAAAYYY better than any Class A MH, though.

.....similiar to a lot of newer military trucks is some ways.....might be available after the Iraq war at a reasonable price inless Oskosh gets a rebuild/upgrade contract.....just a thought.....I'll keep a lookout in the surplus market for you.....geofkaye

And if it was 8 wheel drive...you could drive from A to B without having to turn the steering wheel...(what, you think tree's, hills, rocks, cars or houses would get in the way...damn they'd sprout legs and run out of the way at first glance!)

The cab looks like a HMMET (hemet). I don't think the truck has AWD in this case. The HMMET's are pretty sparton. Look like they have DD V8's, probably 8V92's based on how old they are but I could be wrong. Allison transmissions typically I think. I am sure Oshgosh has a site with info on them. They engine might take up some floor area and they don't get great fuel milage or go very fast. If you want an all terrain RV, that would get you pretty close I would think.

Yeah, I know, will probably be a 4x8 (pretty common over here, especially before 5th trailers took off). If you went to the trouble of getting a truck that size with AWD you can be damn sure it would have some pretty agressive tires on it.

This kind of setup is called a "jake leg" with both axles being steerable. It will give the front end a little more floatation over soft surfaces. It also aids when turning the front end by limiting a tendency to skid rather than turn.

I was brought up around trucks like these, espesially the ERF's (our family know more about these trucks than the dealers ever did!) Though the volvo's and older skania's are becoming increasingly common.
I never thought about the twinsteers having better floatation but givin the grounnd conditions these trucks have to cope with that is probably an advantage of them.
Wish I could find a picture of the travel trailers we used to pull. These things are seriously big, especially considering the fact that most of the ERF's where gardner 180hps!
Infact, my granparents had a truck conversion before most of you had thought of them!

Well, in Britian theres a fairly clear distinction between the circus and showmen. Show people are pretty much normal people except their job (pretty much for old times sake now, since it isn't particularly profitable) is taking their rides and attractions to different fairgrounds around the country. Most have good homes during the winter and good jobs.
