I was wondering if there was somebody on here (Larry, where are you?) that has good understanding of the Volvo model numbering system? When I look at TruckPaper.com, there are quite a few that I haven't heard of. I've mostly heard of the VNL610 and VNL770. But they have things listed such as VNL64T610. Is this the proper number and VNL610 is just a shortened up version? What exactly does the 610 or 770 represent? Also, what are the differences between the 420, 430, 610, 630, 660, 670, 770 and 780? There are also some VNM64Ts listed as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1998 volvo 420 volvo engine 425 hp 450k miles,3 axles overall length is 25' I have four wheeler behind cab

L is for long (56" front axle set back compared to the VNM series with a 51" front axle set back), M is for medium....

The figure 42 is a conventional 4x2 tractor configuration i.e. single rear axle or a 6 wheeler.

The figure 64 is a 6x4 tractor configuration, i.e. with tandem rear axle, called a ten wheeler or the most common tractor you see around for pulling trailers....

The T stands for "tractor"..

So you end up with VNL 64 T 61 0

The 61 for the sleeper size....in inches...

the zero ??? I dont know why they throw in the 0...

Dano,

I have converted a number of VNL64T610s, and probably an equal number of VNL610s. I can't tell any difference. I have asked several dealers, none of them could tell me the difference either.

I think VNL 660s and 770s are just too tall for practical RVing. Many RV park spaces are too small to park a 13' 4" tall (and long) truck infront or beside of your trailer. Still, a couple of guys bought them for RV purposes. I don't think any of them have actually done much traveling yet though.

VNL420s, (42 inch sleeper), may be too small to allow registration as motorhomes in some States. Those are the main reasons I convert only 610s and 64T610s.

I will be offline for up to a couple of weeks beginning in the morning. We are hitting the road Tuesday. Heading West, with a 4 day stop in Denver.

I finally have my conversion manual about ready to go but I don't want to post it until IM back online, just in case there are any bugs in the ordering and downloading process.

IM really raring to do some towing with this 2000 autoshift I have now. She's all ready to roll.

Thanks for the info. Just to make sure I understand, the 610 number not only refers to the sleeper length, but also the height? For example, I won't see a 770 flat top because all 770s are condos? How tall are a 610, 660, and 770? Also, given the closeness in size to the 420, 610, 660, and 770, I'm thinking that the 430, 630, 670, and 780 are maybe newer versions? Anybody know what model year the chage took place?

Right. I've also become a student of Volvo-ology. The 610 is a 61" long "midroof", while the 660 is a 66" long "condo", and the 770 is a 77" long "condo". And you're right, those other numbers are newer versions of the above units, and were released as 2003 models, even though the older series also go through 2003 year models. Go figure! Hope this helps you. Take care.

Maybe these two links will clarify some of the numbering and comparisons between the Volvo tractor models:
