Typical In Frame Rebuild Cost?
 

I was looking at some trucks in Truck Paper and was curious to find out what the avg. going rate was for an in frame rebuild. Now, I know it depends on the engine make and model, locale, various labor rates. I've been in the automotive industry for years, and understand all of those things, lol.

Also, has anyone tackled this job themselves, either as a pro diesel tech or backyard mechanic? What parts are typical to replace on an in frame, or come in a kit? What did it run you for parts? How long did it take to do? Did you replace any other parts "while you were at it" just to be safe? Any thing I missed?

I have done it but only to gas engines. and I have only done it for myself on my own vehicles.

I do these as a living.....12.7 liter Series 60 Detroit has a kit for a cost of about $2875.00..not including the head or other incedentals. We do the head for $1500.00 and check everything else and the total cost is around $12,000.00.....Cummins is around $13,500 for ISX, $14,000 + for the ISM and nto sure on the other engines....

What is the average labor standard for an inframe and what is the current Shop Rate per hour ? Just curious. MMM

Shop labor rates are $85.00 per hr for us.....everyone else is $95-$105
I usually allow for 28hrs...but we do it as a flat rate special for $2500.00 on the detroit.

Now I understand what they mean by the good old days. I did an inframe on my Big Cam 400 Cummins in 1980: Inframe kit $1250, cummins reman heads (3ea) $600, reman injectors (6ea) $450, new bearings and seals in turbo $400, oil,filters,hoses,belts and misc $200. Started it on Friday afternoon and finished Sunday evening. Dyno test at Cummins $125. And I thought those prices were High! I guess inflation effects everything but freight rates.... they sure haven't increased that much.
