I want to purchase a new MH and would like to find an Optima with the additional interior height. First I am 80" tall so most Class A's do not excite me. But my real question is about MPG?
What is the real MPG when you have a 45' Optima with 450 MB engine?

.......only your foot will make a big difference....with my Volvo610 and trailer I'm about #36k and at 55-60 i get in the neighborhood of 10-11mpg but at 75[my usual speed-it drops to 6-7in the hills[down shifting] and 7-9 on the flat land in summer....in the winter is drops about 1-2mpg all the way around-but then again I idle more to keep my fat azz warm[AT 72 DEGREES] AND THE GIRLZ COMFORTABLE AT 78 DEGREES......GOD ONLY KNOWS THEY JUST CAN'T JUST PUT ON A SWEATER OR A SWEAT SHIRT AND SWEAT PANTS INSTEAD OF CRANKING UP THE HEAT......THEN OPENING THE WINDOW "TO GET SOME FRESH AIR".....[rant off for the nite]...geofkaye and the Rivercity Girlz......

I've put a little over 6k miles on mine this summer. I'm very meticulous about tracking my mileage. My rig weighs about 27k with full water tanks. I tow a enclosed car hauler about 50% of the time. I most often cruise at 68 mph on the highway. The worst mileage I've gotten is 8.1mpg. The best I've gotten is 9.8mpg. I don't often use the generator, I bet about 20 hours I've got on that. I go about 6-700 miles between fueling. Most of my tanks I'm over 9mpg. That 8.1 was out of character. My engine only had 53,000 miles when I got my coach. I've heard they start to get better mileage around 100k. I don't know if those MB 450 engines would get better mileage than my pre-emissions Cat C-12. My son drives truck over the road. He drives a company truck, Columbia, with the MB450. He runs right at 80k lbs. half the time, when he's delivering. And I don't know how much empty on the returns to the mill. I guess about 30k since his loads are about 50k lbs. His truck is governed at 66 mph. He gets about 5-6 mpg.

I have an 06 Optima 42ft with the 450MB with 33k miles. I get around 9 @ 70MPH. I think Kenneth Rowlette @ 615-948-9771 may have one if you are still looking.

Oh, okay. Does nobody else make a t/c with as high of a ceiling as Optima? Just wondering if you can widen the search a bit to other builders?

While it is true, you can get some great buys in this market on used gear, you can also get some great deals on a custom build too.

I am a big fan of building it your way. I know what I want and it just seems to me that if I am going to spend this much money, I am going to get it done the way I want it done.

In your case, the dead room can make or break the coach. If you have the means, ($$) I would seriously consider having a coach made to your specs and incorporate the head room as well as the rest of the features you want or need. This is especially true if it is something you plan on keeping for many years to come. You will likely be happier in the long run with your truck rather than someone elses ideas.

I feel that is one of the best features of the HDT option vs the Stock RV.

A used HDT and a good builder in this market can create a pretty compelling arguments for the best value.

CAN'T AGREE WITH YOU MORE RADMAN.....IN THIS MARKET THAT IS HOW ONE SURVIVES.....up-lifters and re-uppers are busy and will stay that way for the current time.....everything else RV is dead in the water or sinking daily.....more than 100 dealers in Ohio are gone so far and there are a lot just making it day to day on service.....Sept. sales are at a new low for the decade......anyone with a High Line Rv is talking/thinking of having a up-lift/re-up done instead of buying a new rig....so if you are comfortable with what you got...stay with it for a few more years....repair and replace as needed.....Hang in there and enjoy yourself for as long as practicably/insurable/reasonable and of course safe and comfortable.....things will turn around in a few years and all will be good again......geofkaye...[ANOTHER WORDS-OUTLIVE THE B@ST@RDS].....

That's too bad. I hate when anybody goes out of business. I just went and visited United Specialties today since we were driving right by on our way to Cleveland. They are certainly in business. We went in the shop and they were working on a few different rigs. I had their guy check out my rig and he gave me some pointers of things I need to attend to with a caulk tube. visit was well worthwhile. I'd buy a United Specialties if you can find one. There newer rigs have that extra height you're looking for too.
