2006 Mercedes mbe4000 egr?
 

I just sold my toter last week and I am looking at a 2006. It has 88,000 miles and I was wondering about the egr. My last toter was an 04 and I don't think it had the egr. Both toters have the mbe4000. Anyone on here ever had any problems with egr? How can I tell for sure if the 06 has it? Also I have looked into removing the egr, I found a few places that also have tuning for that but no prices. Any thoughts on this?

The toter is 760 miles away, so I can't really check it out until I plan a road trip.

EGR was mandatory on all on-highway diesel engines built after 2001. The thing a lot of people do not understand is when a conversion unit is built it can be sold as the model year it was built into a conversion. Even though the original truck chassis maybe 20 years old. Example a 1995 highway truck is converted into a motorhome in 2016, if enough components are reworked the unit can be sold as a model year 2016 with zero miles. Even though it had 2 million miles on it.
So the question I have is what year was your '04 engine? If I am understanding you that your '04 had an MBE, I believe the MBE 4000 was never built without EGR.

my 2004 (chassis) doesn't have an EGR Cooler

My toter was titled as an 04, factory built by renegade on a new freightliner Columbia chassis. But for some reason I think the truck body was an 03? But I can't remember for sure. I don't think it had the egr on it. I was wondering if there was a way to tell if the 06 I'm looking at buying has the egr. It too is a factory built renegade on a then new chassis.

Well let's see how good my memory is guys...I believe it (MBE 4000) was introduced in production in November of 2000. Due to a huge legal battle between EPA and the big three diesel engine manufacturers for an alleged emissions violation, the 2004 specifications were going to be pushed up by about a year. Since the MBE 4000 was not in our country in 1998 (When the lawsuit settled and everybody got to pay big fines...) it was not forced into the settlement. However as of January of 2004 it had to comply to 2004 specifications which included EGR. All engines after 2004 would have to have EGR, until 2007 which was the next emissions crunch so more stuff added to it then again in 2010.
I think that is why I don't ever remember an MBE 4000 not having EGR as there were so few early on and I was still fighting EGR issues on Series 60 so I stayed away from the MBE series as long as possible.
Maybe you got a 2003 model engine in your 2004 truck Don??

You may be right on my old toter. The title said 2004, but I believe the renegade books said 03? How bad is it to have the egr? The 06 I'm looking at probably has it.

Never been a big fan of EGR however it's as with any newer technology, if you take care of the maintenance you should be ok with it. I think the heavy haulers had a lot of problems with it due to cooling system capability restrictions being maxed out so the EGR system was the first thing to fail. There are a lot of discussions on line on how to bypass, override or even eliminate completely. Beings I worked for the distributor that was never an option for us since we could be held personally responsible for a $10,000 fine plus the company got a $100,000 fine per incident for tampering with any emission devices. I guess we really pissed off EPA in the 1970's and 1980's by pumping up so many engines!! Our motto was "If it ain't smokin', It ain't workin'!!"

Ok found some stuff out today about the egr. I looked at a 2004 renegade, truck build date 3/2004, renegade kibbe date 6/2004 and there is no egr on this unit.

Looked at a very nice 2005 truck build date 5/2005 and it had the egr on the engine. What I also checked was the fuel mileage and it was showing 6.25. I know a lot of that depends on when it was last reset and driver/conditions, but I thought that was pretty low.
The search continues for my dream toter!........

Not sure why no EGR unless Daimler snuck in some non EGR engines.

I also keep looking for my Dream Chassis, I have reached out to a few online sites via email and phone and no returns from contacts. I actually started looking at Truck Paper and found a couple nice trucks but the Mrs. put a damper on that... Found a 1998 three axle Pete with a Series 60, 13 speed 17' sleeper, full bath and kitchen, 12.5K Onan that can still make money hauling trailers for $119k. Gotta a big "REALLY?" on that one.
I figured I could get a nice 53' trailer to haul all her sewing and quilting machines around!!(LOL) Oh well I guy can keep dreaming right?

Mark, one of the HDT guys has a toy hauler 5th wheel trailer and his wife has all her quilting stuff in the toy hauler portion. Seems like a good setup.
